This demolition was an extreme commitment by the city, taking out riverside blocks of warehouses and businesses. More than 40 city blocks were demolished to build the Jefferson Memorial. The landmark would be built as a memorial to Thomas Jefferson’s role in opening up the west, the pioneers who shaped history, and Dred Scott, who sued for his freedom at the Old Courthouse, located in the same area where the Arch would be built. In 1954 Dwight Eisenhower signed the order for the construction of the monument. City officials liked the idea, and in 1947, a nationwide competition was held to find a design for the monument. The idea for the Arch was first envisioned in 1933 to honor Thomas Jefferson (for the Louisiana Purchase of 1803) and bring new life to St. Louis and showing him the Gateway Arch National Park. Louis, Metro, National Park Service and Explore St. Key partners included the Gateway Arch Park Foundation, Missouri Department of Transportation, Great Rivers Greenway, The City of St. Trivers worked with our design partners to solve the constructibility issues that were presented in creating a subterranean structure that needed to address high levels of security affording a structure with National Landmark status yet remain open and accessible to the public.Ī great deal of coordination was required on this project.
Trivers’ involvement in the coordination with the National Park Service to maintain the integrity of a National Landmark was imperative in executing a project that is historically sensitive yet modern in function and form. As part of the competition-winning Michael Van Valkenburgh master plan, the museum envisioned expansion of the underground museum to the west, creating a new western entry into the Arch Grounds and the museum. Trivers served as a partner for Cooper Robertson and James Carpenter Design Associates for the expanded and renovated Museum of Westward Expansion below the internationally-recognized St.
